SPML: Jummah is BIG deal

Sanad Prep Morning Lights Assemblies are done every morning at Sanad Prep. They serve as a reminder for students and staff. In this SPML assembly we discuss just how big jummah actually is. It is in fact an opportunity to remember we are all connected, its a small (big) world after all.

Sanad Prep students with teacher, Habib Ubaydullah al Attas

Of the few words to describe the da’wah given by the scholar Habib Ubaydullah al Attas, the most prominent word would be ‘enlightening’. The talk was interactive, with the Sanad Prep students answering and asking questions about their Islamic studies, and their Quran memorization. The most interesting section of the talk was when Habib Ubaydullah al Attas spoke of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and his hadith, and the way he lived his life. It was a very beautiful experience, listening to the scholar speak of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and of the examples and importance of ‘Adab’, or manners. The scholar comes from Mecca, and the mood throughout the whole visit was very comfortable. Habib Ubaydullah al Attas told us that although he was a known scholar and hafiz, he did not gain that knowledge for his title. He told us that he learned that knowledge for Allah.

Ms. Kakli is an aspiring writer and creative intellectual. She will be a 10th grader at Sanad Prep next year. We are happy to have her join the SP Village.

Habib Ubaydullah al Attas

This is Habib Ubaydullah’s first official visit the United States, where he will be engaging in teaching, da’wah, and visiting various mosques and community centers to instill the beauty of love of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).

Sanad Trust Foundation and MCA of South Florida are honored to host him on behalf of our community Sunday, May 8, 2016 at the Miami Gardens Masjid. Dinner will be provided.

Biography:

Habib Ubaydullah al-Attas first began his education and rearing at the hands of his blessed parents. His father, Habib Muhsin al-Attas. a man of knowledge, piety, and character; and his righteous mother, Sayyida Khadija bint Abdur-Rahman al-Attas both instilled within him from a young age the love of Allah ﷻ and His Messenger ﷺ and Prophetic character.

Hb. Ubaydullah sought sacred knowledge with an uninterrupted chain of transmission back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the hands of some of the greatest scholars of the age, including Habib Abdul-Qadir al-Saqqaf, Habib Ahmad Mashhur al-Haddad, Habib Abu Bakr al-Attas, Sayyid Muhammad Alawi al-Maliki, Habib Umar bin Hafiz, and many others.

He graduated from Umm al-Qura University in the Holy City of Mecca with a degree in Mathematics. He continues to teach, serve the community, and engage in da’wah.

The Sanad Prep morning assembly today was based on the following Prophetic Hadith…
لَيْسَ الْغِنى عَنْ كَثْرَةِ الْعَرَضِ وَ لكِنَّ الْغِنى غِنَى النَّفْسِ
Richness does not come from an abundance of wealth; [true] richness is the richness of the heart.
– Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)

parenting

It is a busy world we live in, but the parents who are too busy for their children are busier than Allah intended them to be. To help you navigate through these chaotic times, here are a few simple, yet effective habits to adopt that will lead you to have a better relationship with your children.

  1. Pray at least one Salah together as a family: By praying together, you will not only be setting a good example for your children, but will also develop a stronger bond with each other by participating in acts of worship together.
  2. Eat Dinner together: Eat at least one meal together as a family. Instead of watching T.V while you eat, make dinner an excuse to talk to your children about their day.
  3. Familiarize yourself with their technology: We live in times where technology is constantly updating. In a world where technology has countless benefits, the fact that it has its share of evil cannot be denied. You should know how to operate and navigate the devices your kids use, and limit the use of their technology.
  4. Spend time with their friends: Your children will appreciate the fact if you make an effort to get to know their friends, and it will also give you a peace of mind.
  5. Pick up a hobby together: This will help you to define your relationship with your children, and help you to also develop a bond of friendship with them.
  6. Tuck them into bed, yes even the teens: If your kids are young, right before going to bed is a good time to read to them. You can also share your childhood stories with your kids, no matter how old they are. Your children want to talk to you! Give them a chance to open up. They appreciate the time you take out for them.

The relationship between parents and children is extremely valuable. It is a blessing, unlike any other blessing granted to us by Allah. May Allah make the process of parenting easy and successful for all the Sanad parents. (Ameen)

LG Success

So, I thought I would have a very different conversation with the Sanad Prep SOKs on their way up to the MIST 2016 competition this past Friday. They were struggling to raise funds for the film equipment needed to create the short film submission. They were struggling because of their lack of social media involvement, which I thought was a good thing. I decided to write a short note on their behalf late Thurs, the day before their trip and a couple days before the fundraising campaign was to end. By mid morning, on Jummah the next day we they had the funds! Masha’Allah. I myself don’t really understand how this social media thing works too well. But, through my work with Sanad Trust Foundation I have seen the generosity of the human spirit. And I have seen (and experienced) how that generosity lifts the human spirit. Allah is aware of our anxieties and concerns. Sometimes He sends generous souls to the rescue. Thank you to all who gave, shared, and prayed for this small need. We ask that you continue to do so for the humble efforts of Sanad Trust Foundation and Sanad Prep, to change the world for the better…one SOK (student of knowledge) at a time. I pray Allah reward you all for your good.

I shared news of the successful fundraising just before jummah prayers in the masjid. Above is a pic of the smiles you helped create…

So…I am not disappointed the Sanad Prep students haven’t raised the full amount they needed. To be honest with you, I was going to cover whatever they didn’t make. The point was to teach them a lesson. That they have to share their passion, their effort, and their hope so others see what they are doing and want to do. The fact is though we are living in a social media, virtual, viral world…and our students are too cool for it. They don’t see what all the buzz and drama is about trying to stand cool on a twitter, facebook, etc etc platform that moves way too fast. In fact, none of our middle or high school students are even active on social media. The result, a crowdfunding campaign that didn’t go too viral and was a bit too vaccine. But to be honest, that’s cool to me. Because to be honest, they were too busy living real lives…doing real homework, real traveling, real playing in the real world, and putting the finishing touches on the real film they made with their new camera. The film has been entered in the Muslim Interscholastic Tournament this weekend. We’re driving up tomorrow morning and I planned to tell them not to worry about the money for the camera. But, before I did that I thought I would write this letter for them without them knowing. Maybe I would have the opportunity to tell them not only do I support them and a few others, but several others. And that they don’t need to feel bad that our small non-profit made this investment in them because friends and strangers invested more. Seriously, not trying to emotional blackmail. I just know these kids are not wasting time on social media, and I love them for that. I thought I would spend a little writing this for them. There are 2 days left for the campaign. It’s really not that much. Do what you can do and share where you can. Your love, support and duas are always much appreciated. On behalf of the Sanad Prep SoKs (Students of Knowledge), thank you. Make duas for a safe trip and successful film competition. Jazak Allahu khayr.

PicMonkey CollageAt Sanad Prep when we plan a field trip, our objective is to ensure that our students not enjoy themselves, but also remain students of knowledge while they make an effort to connect to their creator by observing His creation. This week Sanad Prep students took a trip to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center which is a facility that increases public awareness of coastal and marine ecosystems. Before we left for the field trip, we instructed our students to be on their best behavior. We reminded them that the best form of dawah is through their actions and so, it is important that they are polite to the people at the nature center and they thank them for their service before leaving. Ustadh Rehan also advised students to give due respect to each creature of Allah that they observe at the facility. We had also asked them to discover one thing that reminds them of Allah.

At the end of the day, the students shared their discoveries and we were fascinated by their ability to connect things at a much deeper level.  One of the students gave an example of how Lion Fish were not meant to be in Florida’s ecosystem and now it has become a major issue since the lion fish reproduces rapidly and is a threat to many of the fish that protect Florida’s coral reef. He connected this example to how Allah has created everything in a perfect balance and if humans attempt to disrupt that balance, they only end up harming themselves.  We hope to continue to provide similar learning experiences for all of our students in the future.  If you get a chance, please do ask your child about his or her experiences in the world around them. We are sure, you will learn many new facts and be fascinated as well.

Letting them Express Themselves: Giving our Children the Chance to Achieve Greatness

Our Prophet (may Allah bless him, and may He grant him peace) was a paragon of excellence, the exemplification of virtue and he is the guide to all that is good and beneficial for us in this life. He said, “When a person passes on from this life, his deeds are cut off except for that which benefit from of three things: a continuous charity, teaching knowledge that continues to benefit people and a righteous child that prays to Allah for him.”
