Book Review: Prayer of the Oppressed

Imam al-Dari’s words are remembered today because of their spiritual nature and everlasting content. The translation and introduction done by Hamza Yusuf is extraordinary in its accomplishment. Yusuf has successfully been able to convey content, context, and melody in his work.
The introduction and prologue too are captivating. This is uncommon when the heart of the book is clearly Imam Dari’s passionate and flowing plea. Both in the original Arabic and in Yusuf’s English translation the reader can move with the same emotional rhythm Imam Dari’s heart and soul had when he wrote this masterpiece.
The reading of the supplication is natural and lucid. One can easily read it to a child as a bedtime prayer or to adults as spoken word poetry. Young and old, lovers of poetry and lovers of God…all will benefit from this translation and introduction by Hamza Yusuf. Imam Dar’i and the One whom his plea was for should be pleased.

The Sanad Team was invited to the ISNA East Zone Conference. We spoke on the need to reassess how we define spiritual education and the soul-centered model used by Sanad to address the needs of the community.

The Sanad Team’s proposal for the ISNA Education Forum, a national meeting in Chicago was also accepted and we have been invited to speak at the forum later this year. We will be sharing our strategies and programs for creating an environmental ethic in Muslim communities and youth. One example is the Sanad ibn Battuta Adventure Caravan that took place in the Summer. To read the article in its entirety follow the link below.

Sanad Learning Center plans to have single gender classrooms. Here is a great article in the Herald about the positive effects of this model.

Single-sex schools prosper — if you can get kids to go

Five years ago, the school gave parents a choice: Enroll your kid in a single-gender or co-ed classroom. A team from Stetson University studied how the fourth-grade students fared on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test in writing.

In the co-ed classrooms, 59 percent of girls passed the FCAT. In the single-gender classrooms, the number was 75 percent.

The split was even wider for boys. In co-ed classrooms, 37 percent of boys earned passing scores. In single-gender classrooms: 86 percent.
